Introduction

Though small in size, a Go board is like a miniature cosmos—its grids contain infinite reflections on life. The game of Go (also known as qi or yi in ancient texts) was not only one of the Four Arts cherished by scholars—alongside zither, calligraphy, and painting—but also a rich cultural memory passed down through imperial courts, Buddhist temples, inner chambers, and bustling neighborhoods. Originating among the elite in ancient China, this intellectual pastime spread throughout East Asia over the centuries and continues to thrive today in professional tournaments, artificial intelligence, and pop culture alike.

This exhibition draws upon the poetic resonance of Go’s historical names to highlight outstanding players and compelling tales regarding the ancient game. Featuring over sixty selected works—from paintings and calligraphy to rare books and objects—spanning the Han to Qing dynasties, the exhibition reveals how emperors and generals strategized on the board, how scholars built friendships over the game, how monks and immortals sought spiritual insight through play, and how women passed their time in elegant amusement. A wide range of Go manuals and equipment is introduced alongside other traditional games such as liubo, backgammon, and Chinese chess, offering a glimpse into the diverse and lively gaming culture of the past. The section “The Game of Go in Taiwan” turns to the present, showcasing how Taiwanese Go players have stepped onto the international stage, writing new chapters in world Go history.

For the ancients, the game of Go was a mirror of character and a means of cultivating the self. The goal was often not victory, but the joy of companionship and reflection. Even today, one need not be a master to find, in the quiet rhythm of a game, a moment of tranquility—and perhaps a gentler pace for navigating life.
