National Palace Museum

This summer, the National Palace Museum (NPM) introduces the Hide-and-Seek Insects Special Exhibition for families with children. The exhibition presents insect paintings (from different dynasties and in different forms) in the collection of the NPM to allow visitors to enjoy ancient paintings at ease. As visitors search for little creatures in the paintings, they look like ancient painters playing the game of hide-and-seek, find joy in finding the little creatures, and learn to appreciate the painters’ remarkable painting skills.

The incorporation of modern natural science creates a new dimension (contrary to traditional art viewing) for exploring paintings. By examining the inspect species closely, visitors can determine whether the insects in the paintings are realistic or imaginary in physical appearances, enabling them to have a deeper understanding when evaluating ancient paintings. Visitors’ knowledge of insects’ habits and habitats will enable them to assess whether the animals and paintings depicted are arranged logically; and gain insight into the observations made and stuff drew by the painters. Such a discovery will allow visitors to learn more about history, art, and the history of science.
