Educational outreach

  • Drawing on its rich artifact collection and educational resources, the NPM integrates materials from different domains into its educational courses. NPM galleries become creative experimental spaces for students to explore, create, and learn from daily life activities, making education more appealing and relaxing for students.

*All domestic students (i.e., those holding a valid student ID issued by a school accredited by the Ministry of Education) and individuals under the age of 18 (of any nationality) may visit the NPM free of charge.

  • Nurturing the Next Generation of Cultural Workers: Museum Volunteer Service Experiences

    Junior Volunteer Tour Guides

To provide school-aged children with opportunities to participate in museum volunteer services and to cultivate the next generation of civic-minded individuals dedicated to serving the society, the NPM has recruited and trained elementary school students in grades five and six as junior volunteers during their annual winter vacations since 2009. Through lively yet in-depth teaching and hands-on practice—including oral presentation exercises and on-site guided tours—the students experience what it is like to be junior tour guides.

  • Youth Cultural Ambassadors

To encourage teenagers to learn more about NPM artifacts and express their creativity, the NPM has recruited senior high school student volunteers each summer since 2001. In 2017, such an endeavor evolved into the “National Palace Museum Youth Cultural Ambassador Empowerment Program.” Through creative interpretations of classic NPM artifacts, the program inspires young people to maximize their potential while cultivating their core competencies such as their leadership, communication, exploration, collaboration, and shared learning skills.

  • Free Visits for Rural and Remote Schools Nationwide

To support students from rural and remote areas, encourage school visits to the NPM, reduce the urban–rural cultural gap, and offer aesthetic learning experiences, the NPM launched the “Have Fun in NPM: Students’ Adventure at the Northern Branch” program in 2019. The program provides transportation between participating schools and the NPM, accommodation and insurance for the day of visit, and designated guided tour services. These arrangements ensure that teachers and students can visit the NPM safely and enjoyably.

  • Mobile Education for Rural and Remote Areas

To ensure that schools in rural and remote areas can access NPM resources, the NPM integrates maker education and hands-on activities into its outreach program. In collaboration with the Maker & Tech Center at New Taipei Municipal Jin-Shan High School, the NPM has jointly developed traveling courses delivered directly to schools. Using artifacts from the NPM’s collection as teaching materials, thematic courses on topics such as “epidemic prevention and medicine,” “bronze inscriptions,” and “street vendor toys” have been created. These courses are designed according to students’ ages and learning needs, allowing teachers and students who cannot visit the NPM easily to still have access to and learn about its artifacts. • In-depth, Accompanied Learning Programs: Developing School-Specific Courses

In response to competency-oriented methods advocated in the Ministry of Education’s new curriculum reform policies, the NPM studies the distinctive characteristics and needs of schools at different levels and introduces museum–school partnership programs. Through these collaborations, the NPM provides teaching resources and works with teachers to design learning content before, during, and after museum visits. NPM artifacts are incorporated into existing school curricula, and interdisciplinary, cross-domain courses are developed.

In alignment with the 12-Year Basic Education Curriculum Guidelines implemented in senior high schools and below, the NPM develops thematic courses based on its art collection. Flexible curricula are co-designed and implemented with schools from the senior high school level downward, strengthening the connection between museums and schools. These initiatives help teachers develop the ability to utilize the NPM’s educational resources. Completed lesson plans are publicly shared for reference and use by schools at all educational levels. For more information, please contact Ms. Deng by phone (ext. 2775) or by e-mail (sjdeng@npm.gov.tw).

  • The “Beyond Barriers and Touching Beauty” School Outreach Program

By combining artifacts from its collection with local cultural and historical resources, the NPM actively visits special education schools to design multisensory, thematic educational activities. Through collaborative curriculum development and outreach teaching, the NPM introduces the beauty of its artifacts to special education students who may not have the resources to travel long distances.
